Call to Worship Cycle: Salve-ation

These opening words for worship were created to accompany the Lenten sermon series “Salve-ation: A Lent for Healing and Wholeness.” The bolded words are spoken by the congregation. You are welcome to use or adapt these liturgies for worship, with credit. When printing these liturgies, please use the following credit line: “Prayer by Rev. Carol Holbrook Prickett.”

Week 1: Refuge

Lord, we come seeking refuge,
a space to rest and reset our lives.
We breathe in your mercy;
we breathe out your peace.
Quiet in us all voices but your own;
we will call upon your name.

Week 2: Intimacy

Lord, we come seeking your face,
to see and know you better.
Give us strength for when you seem far;
give us joy when you are near.
As we draw close to your beauty, Lord
be the stronghold of our life!

Week 3: Joy

We come as guests invited
to the banquet of the Lord.
Here is an abundance of mercy,
a table loaded down with love.
Pull up a chair; take your place.
satisfy your heart with God!

Week 4: Reconciliation

Like the prodigal son, we wonder:
can we come home?
Will we still be wanted?
Will we still be loved?
Like the father, God answers:
Yes. You are so loved here. Let us celebrate!

Week 5: Outpouring

We gather this morning to worship Christ
bringing the best of ourselves here.
As we pour ourselves out in praise,
may we become ever more like the Crucified.
With all we are and all we have
let us praise the Lord!

Week 6: Shout Out (Palm Sunday)

“Hosanna!” They shouted. “Save us!”
“Hosanna!” We’re shouting. “Save us!”
Savior, ride into our hearts again,
wash us with excitement and hope,
give us a reason to praise
and to shout again, “Hosanna! Hosanna!”

Week 7: Alive (Easter)

Hold your head high. Christ has risen!
Death has been conquered.
Christ has restored us to new life.
All that is broken can be made whole.
Rejoice! Life bursts through death.
Jesus Christ is alive for evermore! Alleluia!
