Lenten Resources

Season of Lent

Lent is the season of preparation for Christ’s death and resurrection. It invites us to contemplate a story of faithfulness, suffering, pain and joy, taking us to the depths of human experience and heights of divine power. These liturgies and sermon series are appropriate for anytime during the season of Lent.

Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday reminds us of our frailty: we put ashes on our head to remind us that we are fragile, and will one day pass into death. But Ash Wednesday also reminds us of God’s strength: we shape those ashes into a cross, to remind us that nothing, not even death, can separate us from the love of God in Christ our Lord.

Palm Sunday

On Palm Sunday we celebrate Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, when Jesus rode into the city on a donkey and crowds waved palm branches in anticipation of this unusual king’s victory. Palm Sunday also tips us forward into the roller coaster of Holy Week, which will see Jesus arrested, put on trial, and executed.

Maundy Thursday

The word “maundy” comes from the same root as “mandate.” We remember that Jesus’ final command to his disciples was to love one another, which he lived out by washing their feet. We also often recreate Jesus’ final supper with his disciples, when he used bread and wine to explain to them his new covenant of grace.

Good Friday

Jesus died on the cross around 3PM on a Friday. Although the details of Christ’s crucifixion are horrific, we see the goodness of God shining through the cruelty of human beings: Christ’s steadfast faithfulness, compassion, and strength leading him to die so that we would know how much we are loved.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a right spirit within me.

Psalm 51:10
