Call to Worship Cycle: The Lord’s Prayer

These opening words for worship were created to accompany the Lenten sermon series “The Lord’s Prayer.” The bolded words are spoken by the congregation. You are welcome to use or adapt these liturgies for worship, with credit. When printing these liturgies, please use the following credit line: “Prayer by Rev. Carol Holbrook Prickett.”

Week 1

One day Jesus was praying in a certain place.
When he finished, one of his disciples said to him:
Lord, teach us to pray.
We have come with the same question.
With so much to say, how do we find the words?
Lord, teach us to pray.
In this sweet hour, open our hearts to yours
and give us a prayer to change the world.
Lord, teach us to pray.

Week 2

I will extol you, my God and King,
and bless your name forever and ever.
The Lord is good to all,
and his mercy is over all that he has made.
Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and your dominion endures throughout all generations.
The Lord is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth.

*adapted from Psalm 145

Week 3

I stretch out my hands to you;
my soul thirsts for you like a parched land.
Let me hear of your steadfast love in the morning,
for in you I put my trust.
Teach me the way I should go,
for to you I lift up my soul.
Teach me to do your will,
    for you are my God.

*adapted from Psalm 143

Week 4

Attune us, Lord, to your gifts this day:
air in our lungs,
a hand to hold onto
bread on our table.
Attune us, Lord, to our work this day:
singing your praise
resting our souls
sharing our bread
This is the day the Lord has made
this is the day we have been given
let us rejoice and be glad in it!

Week 5

The Lord is merciful and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
God does not deal with us according to our sins
nor repay us according to our iniquities.
For as the heavens are high above the earth,
so great is God’s steadfast love toward those who revere the Lord;
as far as the east is from the west,
so far God removes our transgressions from us.

*adapted from Psalm 103

Week 6 (Palm Sunday)

Who is that man on a donkey?
The one tempted in the wilderness.
The one tested by the scribes.
The one betrayed by a friend.
The one praying for another way.
The one seeing God’s will through.
Jesus is on the move.
We will follow where he leads!

Week 7 (Easter)

Welcome to the kingdom of our God
where love always wins the day.
Witness the power of our God
who raised Jesus Christ from the dead.
Worship in the glory of our God
shining around us in beauty and joy!
