A Prayer for Parents and Caregivers During The First Day of School

God, in the quiet
of this first day back to school,
we lift our prayers.

In the blissful quiet,
with no children to interrupt us,
we pray.

In the worried quiet,
while we wonder how they’re doing,
we pray.

In the angry quiet,
because this morning was anything
but picture-perfect,
we pray.

In the heartbroken quiet,
because we dreamed of first days of school,
and they never came,
we pray.

In the exhausted quiet,
because we are too old for this,
we pray.

In the nostalgic quiet,
because our kids are older now,
and we haven’t bought crayons in a long time,
we pray.

In the bittersweet quiet,
because our kids are off to college,
and while we are so proud,
we no longer get to hold their hands,
we pray.

In the hopeful quiet,
because this year could be better,
we pray.

Lord, you know what it is
to send a child out into the world.

Send your Son again,
to sit beside our children,
to fill their hearts with love
and their souls with courage,

and to fill our quiet with His peace.

Amen.
