This liturgy was written for the baptism of youth who are also confirming their faith.
Invitation to the Sacrament
The sacrament of Baptism happens only once
because in God, there are no take-backs.
You are the Lord’s forever.
By this ordinary water,
we are reminded of the extraordinary grace of Jesus
who gently washed his disciples feet
to show them the truth of his love
and who welcomes us into his heart
like raindrops are welcomed into the ocean.
Let us remember with joy our own baptism,
as we celebrate this sacrament.
Thanksgiving Over the Water
Loving God, we praise you today for all you have done for your people:
creating a world of beauty to live in,
freeing us from slavery of every kind,
giving us a home to dwell in,
sending Jesus to show us the way home to you.
Loving God, we praise you today for all you have done for [Names],
before they could ever name it or know it,
for the families and friends you have given them,
the faith you have nurtured in them,
the gifts you have placed in them,
the future you are preparing for them.
Spirit, pour yourself out upon us and upon this water.
Bless now your beloved children [Names],
who now pass through these waters.
Deliver them from death to life,
and help them feel your mercy flowing down.
Bind them to the household of faith,
guard them from all evil.
Strengthen them to serve you with joy
until the day you make all things new.
To you be all praise, honor, and glory;
through Jesus Christ our Savior,
who, with you and the Holy Spirit,
lives and reigns forever. Amen.
