Legacy: Confession Cycle

These unison confessional prayers were created to accompany the stewardship sermon series Legacy. You are welcome to use or adapt these liturgies for worship, with credit. When printing these liturgies, please use the following credit line: “Prayer by Rev. Carol Holbrook Prickett.”

Week 1: “A Future Not Our Own”

Merciful Lord,
upon whom we build our life
forgive us for our sins.
We have trusted in our own efforts,
and failed to trust in yours.
We have loved control,
and shied away from hope.
We look to the future with fear,
as if you are not already there.
Rebuild our trust in you, O Lord,
our Rock and our Redeemer,
that we might walk in your paths
and place our legacy in your hands alone.
Amen.

Week 2: “Our Ancestors’ Faithfulness”

Merciful Lord,
upon whom we build our life
forgive us for our sins.
We have discounted what is small,
confused faith with futility,
and ignored where our ordinary stories
intersect with your eternal story.
Give us the trust to commit ourselves
to acts of ordinary faithfulness
without knowing where they may lead,
but trusting that you will make good.
We pray in the name of Jesus Christ,
our Rock and our Redeemer. Amen.

Week 3: “How Will We Be Remembered?”

Merciful Lord,
upon whom we build our life
forgive us for our sins.
We hoard what we have
and are frightened of giving too much.
We are quick to judgment
and slow to generosity.
We neglect to tell the stories of the saints,
and even more, to live lives like theirs.
Break open our closed fists,
that we may hold our hands up
in praise of you, Jesus Christ,
our Rock and Redeemer. Amen.

Week 4: “Building on Christ”

Merciful Lord,
upon whom we build our life
forgive us for our sins.
We are prone to folly:
boasting in our success
dreaming selfish dreams
taking credit and blame
when neither is due us.
Give us humble hearts, O Lord,
admitting that all our good works
depend on your grace in the end.
Help us do our part,
and give the rest to you.
We pray in the name of Christ,
our Rock and our Redeemer. Amen.
