These opening words for worship were created to accompany the sermon series “Finding God in the Flames: Campfire Stories from the Bible.” The bolded words are spoken by the congregation. You are welcome to use or adapt these liturgies for worship, with credit. When printing these liturgies, please use the following credit line: “Prayer by Rev. Carol Holbrook Prickett.”
Week 1: “Tongues of Fire”
Holy Spirit, light the fire.
Set our hearts blazing.
Holy Spirit, light the fire.
Fan the flames of adoration.
Holy Spirit, light the fire.
Spark in us your love!
Week 2: “The Burning Bush”
We come to worship the great I AM
who burns but doesn’t destroy
who is our mystery and our answer
who is three and who is one
who is beyond us and within us.
I AM, we worship you!
Week 3: “Eternal Flame”
Lord, stoke the embers of our hearts
stir our souls to burning
Clear away the weariness of the week
and turn our focus fully to you
Warm us by your steady presence
Restore us to your glory!
Week 4: “Denial by Firelight”
Christ, we are here to commit to you
Quiet our anxious minds,
and still our troubled hearts.
We are here to commit to you,
Focus our wandering thoughts
and deepen our good intentions.
We love you, Lord, with all we are:
as sinners and saints, failures and faithful,
we commit our lives to you!
Week 5: “The Fiery Furnace”
We worship just one God
the God who flung the stars into the sky
and crafted our inmost being.
We worship just one God
who rescues us from danger,
and deserves our every praise.
We worship just one God,
Creator, Christ, and fiery Spirit
now and forevermore!
Week 6: “Campfire on the Beach”
Lord, we have come to the lakeshore
where you have prepared a place for us.
Nourish us with your word,
sustain us with your calling,
reassure us with your presence
warm us with the fires of your love.
Lord, let us sit awhile with you
and simply be your friend.
