Call to Worship Cycle: Walking in the Storm

These opening words for worship were created to accompany the sermon series Walking in the Storm: Spiritual Practices for a Resilient Faith. You are welcome to use or adapt these liturgies for worship, with credit. When printing these liturgies, please use the following credit line: “Prayer by Rev. Carol Holbrook Prickett.”

Week 1: “Walking in the Storm”

You call us out upon the waters:
into the raging storms of life.
But there you are among the waves,
hand outstretched to hold us fast.
We will call upon your strength.
We trust and praise you now!

Week 2: “Body Care”

At the end of a long week, and the beginning of another,
we bring our whole selves to you,
aching or rested, hurting or whole
we bring our whole selves to you.
Renew, refresh, and restore us in our worship;
bring your whole self to us now.

Week 3: “Lament”

Out of the depths, we cry to you, O Lord,
Out of the depths, we worship you.
We bring our praise and prayer.
We bring our pain and loss.
Out of the depths, we cry to you, O Lord.
Out of the depths, we worship you.

Week 4: “Forgiveness”

Come, worship the Lord our God
who has spun this new day into being
a day for us to praise and rejoice
to forgive and be forgiven
to live as God’s children
and enjoy God’s love!

Week 5: “Anger”

We come to worship the God of the ages
who is more faithful than we could ever be
more gracious than we can imagine
and more powerful than we can dream.
We come to worship the God of this moment,
who is here with us today!

Week 6: “Connection”

People of God, see what gifts we are given:
bread and cup, the feast of grace;
a spirit of wisdom and revelation to come to know God;
the Holy Spirit always at work within and beside us;
the privilege of being Christ’s body on earth.
Filled with the gifts of God, let us praise the Lord!

Week 7: “Grace”

In a fractious and fractured world,
we come to the well-spring of Grace.
In this hour of worship and rest, O Lord,
quiet our minds and restore our souls
that we might worship you with our whole hearts
and reflect your grace with our whole lives.

Week 8: “Gratitude”

We come with grateful hearts
for music and scripture
for faith unextinguished
for Sabbath rest and routine.
We come with grateful hearts
to worship the God of grace!
