House Blessing for a Pandemic

Ever-present God, our rock and foundation, bless our homes.

Bless the homes that keep us safe, that give us shelter, each roof spread over us like the shelter of your wings.

Bless the homes that have suddenly become too small, crowded with family we cannot escape, or too big, in our loneliness and isolation.

Bless the homes filled with love and memories, and bless the institutions–dorms, rehab facilities, nursing homes, prisons–we did not choose or where we do not feel at home.

Bless those who live in homes that feel safe and secure; bless those who must leave their homes to fulfill essential work, and bless those whose homes are the most dangerous place to be, as tensions mount and anxiety soars.

Bless the homes that have become offices, schools, gyms, vacation spots, and doctor’s offices all rolled into one.

Bless the homes that have seen grief and loss, whose emptiness seems too much to bear.

Bless those who have no homes, who cannot shelter in place because they have no place to stay. Lord, cover them and protect them and bring them to safe harbor.

Just as you spoke peace to those locked in a house in Jerusalem on Easter evening, speak peace to us, and bless our homes and all who live in them. Bless our eating and our sleeping, our relaxing and our exercising, our working and our learning, our praying and our cleaning, our dance parties and arguments, our resting and our restlessness.

Fill our homes with your warmth, your peace, your mercy, your forgiveness, your strength, your gentleness, your healing, your steadfastness, your love, and above all, your real and true and felt presence.

We pray in the name of the One who made his home with us, that we might one day find our home with you. Amen.
