This prayer is appropriate for an ordination/installation service of elders or for the opening of a session meeting.
God of grace,
pour out your Holy Spirit on [names],
that they may be your faithful elders in this church.
Give them creativity and sound judgment,
wisdom and courage
to order the life of the church
in obedience to your Word.
Help them to feel your presence
in committee meetings and budget discussions
in welcoming new members and attending presbytery
in their prayers for the health of this congregation
in every crucial act of ordinary service.
Secure their identity as servant leaders following Christ
who came not to be served but to serve,
and to give his life to set others free.
Give them joy in their walk of faith
and a sure sense of your abiding presence
for their work of ministry.
